I have lived in Leiden, The Netherlands for more than 35 years and I am originally from Indonesia and Australia, so that makes me half Indonesian, half Australian and half Dutch…
I started painting in my teens and did an A-level in Art and Design at school. I felt really at home in the art room. Painting or being creative just feels so natural. I had a break of several years, being ill with depression as well as having children. But I started to paint again in 2008, doing courses at Ars Aemula Naturae in Leiden, with Peter Duivenvoorden www.dewerkplaats.it, and later with with Barthel Brussee, and at the Royal Academy in The Hague. I haven’t really stopped since with a bold use of colours, thick paint and impressionistic and expressionist brush strokes. I use brushes, but I also use palet knives to add texture and energy. My techniques include starting with a thin underlayer and then going on from there, layer on layer on layer… I also love working alla prima and smudging with my hands.. I experiment now and again with other materials in the paint or on the canvas: sawdust or other matter, like twigs or cloth.
Lately I have begun experimenting with tape. By using tape, I challenge the viewer and start a conversation: what is the focus of the painting and does the tape add or detract from the painting?
I use my Canon camera for preparatory work, but have also started editing some photos in black and white. I find that black and white projects a romantic aspect which I find attractive.
